Huawei launched four new devices in its flagship smartphone lineup – the Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 Porsche Design, and the Mate 20 X. The Mate 20 sits at the bottom of the lineup, while the Mate 20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro Porsche Design are brand’s premium offering, packing a cutting-edge camera and battery hardware.
The Mate 20 X, however, is in a different league altogether with its massive 7.2-inch display. Yes, the display is 7.2-inches, and Huawei is still calling it a smartphone rather than a tablet. Well, jokes aside, the Mate 20 X packs some exciting features that boost the device’s gaming and multimedia capabilities, and here are nine of them that we think you should know about.
Massive 7.2-Inch OLED Display
The Huawei Mate 20 X probably has the largest screen that we’ve come across on any smartphone – a 7.2-inch OLED unit. This OLED panel comes with Full HD+ resolution, giving it enough pixel density to avoid visible pixelation. The display is also HDR capable, meaning it has a wider colour gamut, better colour accuracy, and higher brightness than most non-HDR panels. Unlike the rest of Mate 20 smartphones, which have a large notch, the Mate 20 X has a waterdrop notch, making it slightly less ugly.
HiSilicon Kirin 980 Processor
Huawei came out with Kirin 980 SoC a couple of months ago, and it has used the same in the Mate 20 X. The Kirin 980 is currently the second most powerful SoC in a smartphone beating the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and the Exynos 9810 out of the water. Inside the Kirin 980 is an octa-core processor (2×2.6 GHz Cortex-A76, 2×1.92 GHz Cortex-A76, & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A55) and Mali-G72MP10 GPU.
Huawei has also packed the device with GPU Turbo 2.0. Although the GPU Turbo 2.0 is a gimmick for marketing, it does provide some energy savings in a few games. With all this processing power, you can expect chart-topping fps in games, and stutter-free multitasking with the Mate 20 X.
Stereo Speaker, Wider Range of Audio Codec Support, & Dolby Audio
The Huawei Mate 20 X comes with stereo speakers – one at the bottom and one in the waterdrop notch, that also doubles up as an earpiece. According to Huawei, these speakers have a symmetrical design and a higher dynamic range of 40 dB, giving higher quality sound output.
The Mate 20 X (probably) packs the highest number of audio codecs in a smartphone – SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, and HWA Audio. This means no matter which codec support your wireless headphones or audio devices have, they’ll go great with the Mate 20X. There is also Dolby Audio on offer, but I guess that is more of a gimmick rather than giving any real-world performance.
SuperCool System With Vapour Chamber (VC) & Graphene Film
As mentioned earlier, the Mate 20 X packs Kirin 980 SoC, and it has tons of processing power. However, the more powerful a SoC is, the higher is the amount of heat it generates (mostly), and heat throttles the performance. Therefore, to dissipate heat better, the Mate 20 X comes with a vapour chamber and a graphene film. By keeping the temperatures low, Huawei aims to achieve better performance and better energy efficiency.
Three powerfull Rear Camera
Performance is not the only thing the Mate 20 focuses on; imaging is also is its strong suit. The device comes with three cameras on the back – 40MP+20MP+8MP. The 40MP sensor is the main camera, the 20MP unit is an ultra-wide angle camera, while the 8MP camera has a 3x optical zoom for telephoto. Last year’s Huawei P20 Pro still has the best camera in smartphones, and we hope Huawei will stay at the top with the Mate 20 series smartphones.

Feature-Packed EMUI 9
The Huawei Mate 20 X comes with EMUI 9 user interface based on Android 9 Pie. The EMUI 9 brings with it many AI-related features including AI Vision and AI Shopping. With AI-Vision, you can scan any object scenery and get details about it. The AI Shopping works similarly; you can scan any object, and the Mate 20 X will search the net and show you the same (or similar) product along with its buying link.
Another interesting feature that the EMUI 9 brings is Wireless Projection. With the help of this, you can have a desktop-like UI wirelessly on your TV or monitor. Although, your device needs to have Miracast support for this feature to work.
The Huawei Mate 20 X seems like a great smartphone for those who want a large screen, smooth gaming performance, and flagship-grade cameras. However, the smartphone comes at a rather hefty price tag of EUR 899.
